Objective: The purpose of this study was to standardize the shift of hearing thresholds of healthy adults in Korea as a function of age. Specifically, it was also aimed to compare the thresholds of male versus female and right versus left.
Methods: Subjects were consisted of 2,492 adults (male 1,250, female 1,242) with approximately 60 subjects (male 30, female 30) in each of one year age groups from 20 to 59. Subjects were selected from 8 general hospitals and 22 institutes in all over the country. About 80% of the subjects have lived in Seoul and Gyunggi province. Hearing tests were performed with the calibrated audiometers at 2 dB steps either in the sound-treated fixed booth or in the portable booth.
Results: First, hearing thresholds were not significantly changed up to the begining of forties. From the middle of forties, however, the thresholds at 6-8 kHz increased compared to those at the lower frequencies. Second, hearing thresholds of male subjects were generally higher than those of female subjects. Third, the right ear thresholds were slightly lower than the left.
Conclusions: The results suggest that although the subjects are not fully representable for the healthy adults in whole country, the data from this study be considered as the standard of hearing threshold shifts as a function of age. It is also suggested that these data be useful when the age correction in NIHL is needed.
